Digital uses

At work, Amelie uses her computer a lot.

Using a headset, she listens to the client in one ear. In her second ear, a vocal synthesis restores what’s on the screen to her. With her fingers, she interacts with her braille display and her keyboard.

It takes a lot of effort from her because she also must juggle between several different applications to answer customer questions.

She would like to be autonomous in her private use of digital technology, but it's complicated, few sites comply with accessibility rules.

Equipment

  • Braille display
  • Jaws and NVDA screen readers
  • Mobile phone: Smartphone with screen reader
  • GPS Vocal
  • Colour detector
  • Fixed telephone equipped with a “where am I” button

Digital disability situations

Non-explicit link

On her braille display, Amélie shows the links to the page. She curses when she encounters a link like "click here" that doesn't mean anything out of context.

Unusable form

From her mobile, she recently wanted to have a pizza delivered, but some input fields were not labelled, so she was unable to complete the form.

Impassable CAPTCHA

To log in some websites, it is necessary to complete a CAPTCHA and most of the time she fails. So, she must ask her daughter for help.

Unreadable PDF documents

Like many PDFs she receives, her daughter's reports are unreadable.

Daily basis frustration

  • The impossibility of listening to music in public transport to remain aware of sound signals
  • The absence of any accessible menu in restaurants
  • The few audio-described shows and cinemas
